Official Board Rules + Regulations   01/07/2010

<b>Official Board Rules + Regulations Hello and welcome to The Official LIGHTS Message Board! We hope you find this to be a friendly place to discuss LIGHTS and everything in-between. Please read on for some general rules and etiquette: 1. Post threads in their appropriate forums. Official News: Here you will find most of the recent LIGHTS news. For complete updates visit iamlights.com for more. Forum News: This forum is for all news and updates on the messages boards. Check this forum for updates on the board rules, how to contact the board admin/mods, and more. Help + Support: Having trouble with the boards or need help finding your way around? Post in this forum. New Member Lounge: New members please read this section to find forum rules, guidlines, etc. This section is reserved to talk about you so introduce yourself! If you are new to the boards, please remember to check the board rules. Welcome to the boards and we look forward to chatting with you! LIGHTS Discussion: This forum is for all discussion about LIGHTS, LIGHTS' music and her new album coming soon. See the Official News section for any updates on upcoming albums and new songs. Rumor threads will most likely be addressed by a board admin or mod, but are subject to being closed. Photos: LIGHTS related photo be shared here. Media: All video and other media links can be posted and discussed here. Tour & Shows: All of LIGHTS' tour dates and shows will be posted here. Meet other fans going to shows in your area and discuss all other show related details. Music: Use this forum to post about other musicians you enjoy. Please search the forum before posting. There is most likely a thread on your favorite artist/band you want to chat about. If there is no thread for your band/artist, then feel free to post. Movies & TV: This is the place to talk about your favorite movies. Please don’t double post about the same movie. For example, if there is a thread on Harry Potter and you have info on when it’s going to be available as a DVD, post in the “Harry Potter” thread instead of creating a new thread; however, each Harry Potter movie may have separate topics because of the different titles (that way there isn’t one massive Harry Potter Thread). General Entertainment: Post and discuss other entertainment topics with members here. General Discussion: Discuss whatever’s on your mind here. There’s everything from video games, pets, world events, and more. Creative Lounge: If you love to create web graphics, art, or photography, share your work here. Feel free to post graphic requests and even questions and tutorials here too. Pointless Fun: Looking for a game or to have some fun? Participate in forum games and join the fun! The Secret Clubhouse: This section is private and viewable only to registered members. Use this section to organize fan meetups or discuss personal topics. 2. What To Post: Please be considerate of all board members by thinking before you post. Make sure to use your search button or be willing to go back a few pages to see if something has already been posted so that the information isn't repeated time and time again! For example, when you see a thread discussing LIGHTS' latest video and you want to share your favorite part, please post in the existing thread rather than starting a new one. Asking questions isn't necessarily a bad thing; however, please use the search button first. Do not post the same thread in more than one forum. This will all keep the board less cluttered and help things to run more smoothly. Please post topics in their appropriate forums. If you posted a thread (that doesn't belong in the forum it was posted in) and it has suddenly disappeared, chances are it has been moved to the appropriate forum. Please look there and please DO NOT re-post a moved thread because you cannot find it. Also, feel free to refer back to the forum descriptions above when posting topics. If you aren’t sure where to post, come back here and re-read the info. Choose the forum that MOST relates to your topic. 3. Member Relationships: A lot of people here have become good friends. Some people are on here every day and have relationships outside of the boards. Do not expect to make friends over night. Don’t be afraid of posting or asking questions. We’re all here for the same reasons. Also, don’t hesitate to contact the board admin/mods. They’re here to answer your questions and make this message board a great place for all LIGHTS Fans to hang out. If you stick around though, you'll make friends and participate in a lot of fun activities. ** That said, please be extra cautious giving out any personal information. Additionally, do not post anyone else’s personal/private information on the boards. ** 4. Respect Board Members: Please be respectful of others. It is ok to have an opinion; however, it is not an invitation to bash someone. Disagreement is OK. Controversy is OK. Everyone can be respectful when they disagree. There is no need to get nasty over a disagreement. Keep in mind that people of all ages read these boards. Some people may kid around and be sarcastic, but I think people can generally decipher the difference. Provoking them will not solve anything and if they are bothersome to everyone (and its obvious), they will be taken care of. Report ANY thread you think a moderator should look at. Sometimes the board admin/mods might miss a thread. If you find spammers, obnoxious threads, or anything you think should be reported, send the mods/admin a message or report the thread (see below for more info on reporting posts). 5. Personal Attacks, Drama Llamas, and Trolls: Sometimes, disagreements can turn into personal conflicts. This can be classified as something going beyond a minor disagreement and it turning into something that can be handled outside of the boards. Please, try to avoid these, or they will be handled otherwise. However, if someone makes fun of you because you didn't read the above listed advice, that is NOT considered a personal attack. There is a difference. If it needs to be more clearly defined later, that can be arranged. Drama Llamas: It is easy to let disagreements that arise on the forum to other platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, etc. Sure, its easy to passive aggressively post about a member you don't like. Please keep in mind that there is a fine line between expressing yourself and insulting people for attention. That type of drama doesn't do anyone any good. Also, information shared in confidence shouldn't be posted and passed around elsewhere. It becomes a game of hearsay and that instigates drama. 6. Closed/Deleted Threads: Please be aware that if you don't follow the rules, there will be consequences. It’s up to the discretion of the board admin and moderators. Threads/posts can get deleted, edited, or closed when deemed appropriate. Most likely there is an explanation why a thread has been closed; however, if you are unsure why one of your topics gets closed or deleted, contact the admin/mod that closed it. Threads/posts will ALMOST never be disposed of for an opinion. However, the option is always there for a thread to be deleted/edited (especially if it goes against the board regulations). 7. Reporting Posts: Do you see a post/thread with content that you think violates some of the rules listed above? Most of the time a board admin or mod will catch it. If it’s not closed or handled quickly, feel free to report the post. Although they try, it is not possible for admin/mods to view every post on every page all the time. Any help you can provide in helping us solve these problems is greatly appreciated. When reporting a post, please make sure to include a description why the admin/mod needs to address the thread or post. It will help them know what they are looking for instead of reading through pages of posts. If there are certain members causing trouble in a particular thread, make sure you include their usernames and why you think they should be reported. ** To report a post, use the Report button on the bottom-left hand side of each post. If you can’t find it and still want to report the thread, copy the thread link and send it in a message to the board admin/mods. ** 8. Signature Guidelines: For more information on signature guidelines, click here. 9. Spelling and Grammar: When posting, please make sure to double check your spelling. Additionally, please refrain from using text/AIM speak such as, "i wnt 2 tlk b4 tmrrw" or "idk y u r tlking lyke that". It's ok to use some terms like "lol", "bff" or other common abbreviations, but please don't compose a whole post like that. We appreciate your input and want to make sure that everyone can read it. Also, please don't use a large font or bright colors as your default posting settings. It's ok to use once in a while, but can make your posts difficult for members to read. 10. File Trading/Bootlegs: Discussion of how and where to obtain bootleg (illegally recorded) audios or videos is not allowed. Direct links to such files will be removed promptly and threads will be closed if it gets out of hand. Please keep such discussion segregated to private messages. If you're unsure whether or not something is a bootleg, here's a simple rule of thumb - if someone sitting in the audience recorded it, it's a bootleg. Officially recorded aired on television, radio, etc are perfectly acceptable. If you're still unsure, do not hesitate to contact a mod asking whether or not the audio/video you'd like to post is an illegal recording. This is both out of respect for LIGHTS and any other performers, as well as to conform to all applicable copyright laws. 11. Becoming a Board Mod: If you are interested in applying for a board mod position (or suggesting another member), please PM the board Admin for more information. You can also email your application to lightsnoise@gmail.com stating why you think you'd be a good moderator, any previous experience, etc. Only the board Admin has the ability to add new mods. Any threads about mods (ie suggesting members, bashing mods, etc) will be deleted. If you have concerns about the boards, either post them in the Help section or address it with another admin/mod. 12. Respect Board Mods and Administrators Mods and Admins are only doing their jobs to enforce rules. They are volunteers that are passionate about the community and help it to run. Disrespect towards mods will not be tolerated. However, if you feel they have acted harshly, please contact me privately and i will pass evaluate the issue. The mods are very nice people and if you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact them. They are full of knowledge. 13. LIGHTS Private Life/ Personal Information LIGHTS deserves her privacy. As a result, discussing her personal relationships including rumors and speculations regarding her personal relationships are not allowed. LIGHTS gives us enough of herself through writing songs, performing, blogging/ tweeting, meeting fans, etc. She deserves to have something that's only hers. I believe that throwing out opinions on how we feel about her relationships cheapens it. She doesn't deserve to have her life critiqued by us let alone on HER official forum 14. Lights clarification on Jian Ghomeshi

65 posts in this topic

"I posted comments about Jian Ghomeshi the day after he was dismissed by the CBC where I rushed to defend my manager of 12 years. I am now aware that my comments appear insensitive to those impacted and for that I am deeply sorry.

This is to confirm that as of now I will be parting ways with Jian Ghomeshi as my manager.

I hope everyone can heal from this.

Lights"

Most of the people that would have done all the managerial leg work would still be in place.

JG is kryptonite for many people, myself included, and they are just removing any future association from the equation.

Last month I was even having conversations with a friend in the industry about how he is as a manager and the consensus wasn't that great.  I actually he's made some mistakes with her career.

What was the point of making this thread?

Because lights changing managers is pretty important.

Because lights changing managers is pretty important.

Honestly I rarely ever heard Jian's name mentioned throughout her whole career so far besides thank you's on the album and a few little nods maybe once a year. Not sure how relevant it will be to us fans.

Imagine you are in her shoes. A friend that you treasure VERY deeply screws up. Even if you know they screwed up, you're going to be on there side probably, at least at first. You defend your friends out of compassion, so I don't think it fair that anyone gets mad at her.

Personally, I've found that the take on sexual assault has been getting much better recently when it comes to actually being talked about and prosecuted, but if you look at it without that angle, it's really upsetting to see so many people be shown up for this stuff. For Lights, I can't imagine the feeling that somebody she was so close to since she was a kid would do this. I didn't consider her post "victim blaming", I considered it faith in a person. I mean, nobody would put themselves at the kind of risk to side with somebody unless they were certain that they weren't guilty. It's nice to see that she has apologised now that the truth it out, and obviously, is looking for understanding in the whole thing. I feel it'll be just as hard hitting for her.

Poor thing. I couldn't imagine being in her shoes.

I hope she finds a new manager who will help her through everything and also be a friend.

Why is she changing manager? Am I missing something? I don't think she know more now than before about what Jian did, so why is she taking distance?

This was probably a hard decision and I think so far she's handling it the best way she can. Good job, Lights.

Thank god. If she kept defending him after all the plain, disgusting proof surfaced, I was going to be VERY upset. Good for her.

wow.....he's been charged by the Police and is up on 4 counts of sexual assault and one count of Overcome resistance which carries a potential life in prison sentence.....wow.....he'll be popular in jail.  I always found him to be a slimey, self serving narcissist.

On the flipside, if there ends up being a major plot twist in the case, this dude will never have to work a day for the rest of his life.

I could make fun of the dude for engaging in BDSM, but don't knock it till you try it.

It's a "he said/she said" case. If he's able to produce mountains of text messages where the girls admit to being fine with whatever happened in the bedroom, and only change their story several months later after a falling out with him and learning about his financial assets, this is going to get ugly really fast for everyone who's spoken his name in a negative light.

Will be interesting to see how the news handles that scenario. With how open he's been on Facebook about this situation, I have a feeling he's sitting on mountains of evidence that prove his innocence and doesn't care how much his name is being dragged through the mud.

Same thing is happening in NASCAR right now with Kurt Busch. Girlfriend accused him of beating him in their motorhome at the track several months after they'd broken up, Busch came right out and said he didn't do it, went to the cops with a "book of evidence" that proved his innocence, and surprise, girl was just after his money and nothing came of it.

Ghomeshi is now in Toronto residing with him mom(standard in court proceedings like this, plus his dad died 6-7 weeks ago) and surrendered his passport to prevent any travel. It was believed that he was hiding out in LA for the past month. I actually believe Lights has cut all professional and personal ties and they didn't even speak(even email) when she was in LA 2-3 weeks ago.

http://www.cbc.ca/player/Shows/ID/2619940777/

CBC Fifth Estate aired a 45 minute documentary on Ghomeshi last night. Not easy viewing. This will be a messy court case with lots of dirty laundry aired regarding Ghomeshi, CBC, and the women. From every angle Ghomeshi has a weak case and his lawyer can only try to minimize his punishment, trying to give him some chance at having a future public/private life. The court case will have no Lights references. His lawsuit against CBC was dropped and union grievances against CBC firing him without cause will go nowhere.

http://www.macleans.ca/culture/this-changes-everything-2/

MacLeans did a long piece on him.

Neither of the above 2 links have any Lights reference. In Vancouver fans at the meet & greet were told "no CBC questions" and this 1 ground rule will rightly carry over to all future interviews. I wouldn't expect any comment from her on the topic any time in the foreseeable future.

He had a $500,000 salary from Q, and maybe made a similar amount on his book and roughly that amount managing her. His legal fees will eat as big chunk of that. He was instrumental in getting her career off the ground and she seemed to value his ability to filter which 10% of her songs written got released. I think he made lots of mistakes managing her and that there are a couple areas where she can grow artistically and commercially.

Not sure what's going on with her regarding future management other than her usual agency continuing to book shows. There's 3 big managers in Vancouver, but maybe she goes for someone in LA or Toronto. Her quote at the Vancouver 1 show about "becoming more and more of a west coast operation" was a very curious hint.

I think it's ironic how one of the best selling books in the past two years has been an erotic novel about an innocent young woman willingly entering a BDSM relationship with a wealthy, successful individual...

...and 2015's most anticipated movie is about an innocent young woman willingly entering a BDSM relationship with a wealthy, successful individual, set to be released on Valentine's Day

But suddenly when this exact situation happens in the real world, and the alleged perpetrator is quoted as saying:

We joked about our relations being like a mild form of Fifty Shades of Grey or a story from Lynn Coady's Giller-Prize winning book last year.

it turns into OMG HE HIT A WOMYN!!! JAIL 4 LYFE!!! SEXUAL ABUSE!!!

And he gets fired from his job and loses a large chunk of his wealth and his name is dragged through the mud and the same media which ran ads for a book and movie featuring a couple willingly participating in BDSM is suddenly crucifying the guy for having that sort of relationship with a female.

Man, just WHAT.

Dude, NO. What he did was *not* BDSM and the women who came forward said he never mentioned it before attacking them. He's trying the classic "i'm just kinky" trick that people have done in the past to try and get out of sexual violence. The BDSM community has come forward and said his behaviour was not consistent with what someone would ever EVER do on a first date (choking, punching) and thus i think he just doesn't seem to recognise consent and gets off being a creep. He was just charged with four counts of sexual assault and a charge of choking (which, btw, carries up to life sentence on that charge alone) and has been ordered to live with his mother. this is not just a "boo hoo Jian" thing, this is a serious series of sexual assaults. Posting things like this don't help people want to come forward when someone in power takes advantage of them. His facebook post was a well crafted pile of BS that he paid $600/hr for to a PR company that dropped him like a dead fly as soon as the truth came out.

My concern is that the news source in question has stated that there is absolutely no fact based evidence to back up this story. That these women do not want police involvement, one has already retracted her claim & the Star felt the story was “explosive” & good for public interest. When the guy writing the article says there is nothing to substantiate, that’s a red flag.

If Mr. Ghomeshi did something wrong, then by all rights, he deserved to be fired. But, in this instance, all evidence points to something else entirely. This woman wants no police involvement, but she contacted a reporter. The news source says there is literally nothing to substantiate the allegations & the stories weren’t consistent. But, they ran it because it’s explosive. The CBC confirmed there is nothing to back up her claims, but he’s fired.

If something changes; I’ll be happy to change my opinion. But as it stands, with no factual evidence of any kind, nothing to corroborate the story from the side of the news source & confirmation that the allegations are unfounded; it sounds like wrongful termination.

What bothered me on the Fifth Estate one was about the girl who wanted to work with him at Q and she's like, "I don't wanna have sex with you, but I just wanna work with you" but then she did other stuff with him and was trying to blame him for that cuz she felt used or w.e

Like wtf? That was your choice to do stuff with him, you could have left. How does that even COUNT, as anything bad, or to be on the show. Lol, people hook up all the time and feel guilty after.

I don't know much about the other situations though to speak on them.

Multiple CBC staff confirm the "hate -F***" story and toxic work environment.  Plus the bruising photos Jian himself showed to his bosses.  Under Canadian law consent does no cover bodily harm.

Plus, even if Jian proves wrongful termination he's only able to get $500k annual salary for whatever years left on his contract.  It's also been brought up that his union would likely intentionally not pursue his case out of respect for female union members.

Stories of the girls not immediate leaving Jian is an odd twist to the whole story.  Jian will try to use this against the girls in court.

In no way does this diminish any of their claims of assault one bit.

I'm now hearing stories that some aware of his antics prior to Jian even meeting Lights.  basically this is a 15 pattern of behaviour that occured all across Canada and possibly the US.

A newspaper profile of Jian last year said that he and Feist(she's generally private about her recent dating life) had a extended relationship for a period.  I do not believe Jian was violent towards either Feist or Lights.  I have a theory but it's...quite politically incorrect.

Another quirk to this story involves Lights.  I'm wondering if she had a written contract with Jian 4-5 weeks ago and if got written permission from Jian or his lawyers to leave.  While she can rightly claim that some promoters would legitmately refuse to book her if she continued to defend him - it does raise the question if he can legally sue her for 20% gross revenue over the next couple years or even for the rest of her music career.  While Jian should now be a worth a couple million his legal bills over the next year will take a big chunk of that.
